FL drain note: Under FPC, shower drain sizes must accommodate simultaneous full flow from all fixtures. For multi-head showers with 10+ GPM demand, a 3" linear drain (single pipe) is typically required. For 20+ GPM, consider dual 3" drains or a single 4" drain. FL slab construction limits drain re-routing β plan the drain size before tile!

π‘ FL advantage: Ground water temp of 72β76Β°F means only a 50β55Β°F rise to reach 105Β°F set point (vs 70Β°F rise in northern states). FL tankless units can deliver 30β40% more GPM than their northern ratings suggest.
Custom GPM Override
Override fixture GPM values for specific product specs:
π FL Code β Multi-Head Shower Systems
FPC 408.9 β Shower Compartments
FPC 408.9: Each shower stall shall have a minimum floor area of 900 square inches (30"Γ30") and be capable of enclosing a 30" diameter circle. FL inspectors may require larger for multi-head configurations. Walk-in showers with body sprays often require 36"Γ48" minimum for practical use.
Multi-head showers note: Body spray systems mounted on opposite walls require a minimum 36" stall width to avoid direct spray collision and cross-spray water waste issues in FL. Linear drain installations require waterproofing on all walls to 6" above top spray outlet.
FPC 604 β Water Supply System Sizing
FPC 604.3: The supply pipe shall be sized to accommodate the total demand based on fixture units and developed pipe length. Multi-head showers with 10+ GPM demand routinely require 1" or larger supply runs to maintain adequate pressure at all outlets simultaneously.
FPC 604.4 (Velocity): Maximum velocity in supply piping is 8 ft/s for cold, 5 ft/s for hot. High-GPM showers may require upsizing pipe to maintain these velocity limits and prevent erosion of copper fittings. This is why FL luxury shower plumbing often runs 1" hot and cold to the shower.
FPC 412.2 β Shower Drain Requirements
FPC 412.2: Shower drains shall have a strainer area of not less than 3 square inches of total inlet area and shall be provided with a removable strainer. Multi-head showers need linear drains or multiple point drains to capture full flow β ensure strainer area meets or exceeds FPC requirement for total GPM.
FL slab consideration: Multi-head shower drains in slab construction cannot be easily relocated after pour. In FL renovations, the drain position often dictates the shower layout. Confirm drain location and diameter with structural before design lock-in.
Multi-Head Shower Compliance Checklist
Supply pipe sized for simultaneous full-flow from all heads FPC 604.3 β do not use individual fixture flow β use total simultaneous GPM for pipe selection; typically 1" or larger for multi-head systems
Dedicated ΒΎ" or 1" hot and cold supply runs to shower manifold FPC 604.4 velocity limits β ΒΎ" supply limits hot water to ~5 GPM at 5 ft/s; 10+ GPM showers need 1" supply; pressure-balance or thermostatic valve required
Pressure-balancing or thermostatic shower valve installed FPC 424.3 β all showers require ASSE 1016 anti-scald protection; multi-head showers with steam strongly recommend thermostatic valve for precise temperature control
Drain sized for total simultaneous GPM from all outlets FPC 412.2 β 3" drain for 6β15 GPM systems; 4" or dual 3" for 15+ GPM; linear drain must have adequate grate inlet area; confirm with FL-licensed plumber on slab jobs
Tankless water heater sized for FL-adjusted simultaneous GPM FL ground water 72β76Β°F β 50β55Β°F rise to 105Β°F set point; verify rated GPM at actual temperature rise, not max-rise rating; size 20β30% above calculated shower GPM
Steam generator on dedicated Β½" cold water supply and separate hot water line Most steam generator manufacturers require their own supply line; combined cold supply only (steam units heat their own water internally); check manufacturer spec sheet for FL humidity rating
Waterproofing membrane on all shower walls to correct height FBC R307 / ANSI A108.01 β waterproofing required to 72" above drain or 6" above top shower outlet, whichever is higher; body sprays require perimeter waterproofing; LATICRETE Hydro Ban or Schluter Kerdi common in FL
Ventilation adequate for steam shower moisture load FL already high-humidity climate; steam showers require exhaust fan minimum 110 CFM for steam rooms or per steam generator manufacturer spec; HVAC to be notified of added moisture load

Multi-head shower GPM calculation: sum GPM of all simultaneous outlets; rain head typically 2.0 to 2.5 GPM; each body spray jet 0.5 GPM (e.g. 12 body sprays equals 6 GPM alone); handheld showerhead 1.8 to 2.0 GPM; standard wall head 2.0 to 2.5 GPM; steam generator water supply 0.5 to 0.75 GPM; soaking tub fill 6 to 10 GPM; Florida luxury spa shower commonly 8 to 15 GPM simultaneous demand; master wellness suite 20 to 30 GPM simultaneous; size all pipe and tankless for worst-case simultaneous operation
Tankless water heater sizing for Florida: Florida ground water temperature 72 to 76 degrees F versus northern states 50 to 55 degrees F; Florida shower set point typically 100 to 105 degrees F; therefore temperature rise only 28 to 33 degrees F in Florida versus 50 to 55 degrees north; Florida tankless units deliver significantly more GPM than nameplate rating at northern standards; Navien NPE-210S rated 5 GPM at 70 degree rise delivers 8 to 9 GPM in Florida conditions; always size tankless at 20 to 30 percent above calculated shower GPM demand for margin
Shower drain sizing for multi head Florida: FPC 412.2 requires shower drain strainer area not less than 3 square inches; drain flow capacity by pipe size: 2 inch drain handles up to 24 GPM instantaneous; 3 inch drain handles 30 to 50 GPM; for multi head showers over 8 GPM use 3 inch drain minimum in Florida slab construction; linear drain must have grate opening area sufficient for full flow; dual 3 inch drains for very large wellness showers exceeding 20 GPM; plan drain location before slab pour on Florida new construction
