💸FL Solar Water Heater Incentives — 2024–2025
30% of cost, no upper limit
🇺🇸 IRA Section 25C Federal Tax Credit
Covers 30% of purchase price + installation cost for qualifying solar water heating systems. System must be SRCC OG-300 certified. At least 50% of the energy used to heat water must come from the sun (meets FL standards easily). Apply on IRS Form 5695 for the tax year of installation. Credit is non-refundable — you need tax liability to use it. Unused credit can be carried forward. Example: $7,000 system → $2,100 credit. Available through Dec 31, 2032.
100% property tax exemption
🌴 FL Property Tax Exemption (FL §196.175)
Solar water heating equipment does not increase your FL property tax assessment. A $7,000 solar water heater system installed on a home with $200,000 assessed value pays zero additional property tax on the system. File with county property appraiser. This exemption is permanent — it applies every year you own the home. Benefit value: varies, but saves $50–$200/yr in property taxes in most FL counties at typical millage rates.
Sales tax exempt
🌴 FL Sales Tax Exemption (FL §212.08(7)(hh))
Solar energy equipment sold for use in FL is exempt from the 6% FL state sales tax and most county surtaxes. On a $5,000 equipment purchase, this saves $300–$350 at the time of purchase. Your installing contractor should not charge sales tax on qualifying solar thermal equipment. If you are charged sales tax in error, request a correction before payment — refunds after the fact require filing with the FL DOR.
Up to $100–$350 rebate
⚡ FPL On-Bill Financing & Rebate Programs
FPL does not currently offer a direct solar water heater equipment rebate (as of 2024–2025), but offers an on-bill financing program for qualifying energy efficiency upgrades including solar water heaters. FPL rebates are available for HPWH ($100–$350). For FPL customers, the solar sales tax exemption + IRA credit is the primary financial incentive stack. Check fpl.com/savings for current program status.
Up to $200 rebate
⚡ Duke Energy FL / TECO Programs
Duke Energy Florida and TECO (Tampa Electric) offer rebates for energy-efficient water heating. Rebate amounts and availability vary — contact your utility directly or check duke-energy.com/home/products/home-energy-improvement. Duke residential customers who purchase SRCC-rated solar water heaters may qualify for additional program benefits. TECO's EnergyAdvantage program includes water heating upgrade incentives.
📋SRCC OG-300 Certification — Why It Matters in FL
✅ FL requires SRCC OG-300: Florida Statute §553.97 requires that solar water heaters sold and installed in FL meet SRCC (Solar Rating and Certification Corporation) OG-300 standards. Systems that are not OG-300 certified cannot receive the FL state incentives and may not be installed by licensed FL contractors.
✅ IRA credit requires SRCC OG-300: The IRS requires SRCC OG-300 certification for solar water heating systems claiming the 25C tax credit. Non-certified systems are ineligible — even if they function identically.
✅ How to verify: Visit solar-rating.org and search for the system or collector model. Your licensed FL solar contractor should provide the OG-300 certificate number with your installation documentation.
📋 FL permit and inspection: Solar water heater installation requires a plumbing permit (for the water connections) and possibly a building permit (for roof penetrations / structural). Our licensed CFC plumbers handle the full permit package and ensure code-compliant installation.
