Florida Public Water Overview

All FL public water systems must meet EPA/FDEP Safe Drinking Water Act standards and publish annual CCR reports. Florida has 3,847 community water systems serving ~20 million people. Compliance โ‰  zero risk โ€” read on for what your area's water typically contains.

What is a CCR?

Every FL public water system serving 25+ people must publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) by July 1. The CCR lists all detected contaminants, the MCL (Maximum Contaminant Level โ€” the legal limit), and the MCLG (the level with no known health risk โ€” often lower than the MCL, or zero for carcinogens).

โš ๏ธ
"At or below the MCL" โ‰  Safe. It means Legal.
Key Distinction

The MCLG is the health-protective target. For known carcinogens like TTHMs and HAAs, the MCLG is zero โ€” but the enforceable MCL is higher. If your CCR says "detected TTHMs: 65 ppb, MCL: 80 ppb" โ€” you're technically compliant but in the top 20% of FL for DBP exposure.

Always compare: detected level vs. MCL vs. MCLG. The gap between MCLG and MCL is where risk lives.

๐Ÿ”
How to Find Your CCR

Search the EPA ECHO database at echo.epa.gov for your water system's CCR. Or visit FL DEP CCR portal. You can also call your utility's customer service directly.

โœ“
What to Look For in Your CCR
  • Are TTHMs detected? Compare detected level vs. MCL (80 ppb).
If >50 ppb: investigate. FL surface water systems routinely approach this.
  • Are HAAs (Haloacetic Acids) detected? Compare vs. MCL (60 ppb).
HAAs persist in cold water โ€” refrigerator filtration matters.
  • Is lead detected? Any non-zero level warrants a faucet filter if you have children.
MCLG = 0. There is no safe level for children.
  • Is arsenic detected? >5 ppb in groundwater systems is worth filtering.
MCL is 10 ppb but MCLG is 0. Common in Floridan Aquifer systems.
  • Is nitrate detected? >7 mg/L is concerning if you have infants.
MCL is 10 mg/L โ€” at that level, infant formula is a real risk.
  • Are PFAS listed? Most pre-2024 CCRs won't list them.
Absence in the CCR โ‰  absent in the water. EPA MCL went into effect 2024.
  • What's the water source? Surface water = higher DBPs. Groundwater = higher minerals/arsenic.

What Actually Removes What โ€” FL Buyer's Guide
Florida-specific guidance. Not all filters work on FL's unique water chemistry.
๐Ÿฅค
Pitcher Filters (Brita, PUR, ZeroWater)
Entry-level ยท $20โ€“$50
Good for: Chlorine taste/odor, some lead (NSF 53 certified models only)

โŒ NOT effective for: PFAS, nitrates, bacteria, arsenic

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฑ FL-specific note: ZeroWater is popular in FL because it removes the high TDS (hardness minerals) giving zero-TDS water. However, zero-TDS water may taste flat and can be slightly acidic โ€” not ideal for long-term use without remineralization. Replace every 40 gallons (more often in FL's high-TDS water โ€” you'll go through cartridges fast).

โญ
Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis (RO)
Best All-Around FL Solution ยท $300โ€“$1,200 installed
โ˜… Recommended for FL
Removes: PFAS ยท Lead ยท Arsenic ยท Nitrates ยท DBPs ยท TDS ยท Hardness

NSF/ANSI 58 certified systems are the gold standard. RO is the only NSF-certified technology that reliably removes PFAS to below detection limits.

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฑ FL consideration: RO wastes water (typically 3:1 waste-to-product ratio). In FL's drought-prone areas, consider high-efficiency RO (1:1 or 2:1 ratio). RO water is slightly acidic and soft โ€” many FL homeowners add a remineralization stage. Filter replacement: $100โ€“$200/year.

๐Ÿ
Whole-Home Carbon Filtration
For whole-house chlorine/odor removal ยท $400โ€“$2,000 installed

โœ… Removes: Chlorine, some DBPs, VOCs, odors โ€” best for chlorine taste/smell throughout the house.

โŒ Does NOT remove: PFAS, nitrates, arsenic, or heavy metals.

Best as a first stage in a whole-home + under-sink RO setup for comprehensive FL protection.

๐Ÿ’Ž
Water Softener
For FL hardness (scale buildup, appliance life) ยท $800โ€“$3,000

โœ… Removes hardness (calcium/magnesium). Significantly extends appliance life, reduces scale on fixtures and water heaters.

โŒ Does NOT remove contaminants โ€” it replaces calcium ions with sodium ions. If you have PFAS or lead concerns, you still need a separate RO or NSF 53 filter.

โš ๏ธ FL regulation note: FL counties vary on salt-discharge rules for softeners โ€” check with your county before purchasing. Salt-free TAC (Template Assisted Crystallization) systems are available as an alternative.

โ˜€๏ธ
UV Sterilizer (For Well Water)
Bacteria/virus kill ยท $300โ€“$900 installed

UV kills bacteria and viruses but does NOT remove chemical contaminants. Always install after sediment and carbon pre-filtration โ€” particles block UV effectiveness and allow pathogens to hide.

What NOT to Buy in FL
Warning

Magnetic water conditioners / "electronic descalers": No scientific evidence of effectiveness for hard water. Frequently sold door-to-door in FL by high-pressure sales teams. Save your money.

Alkaline water machines ($2,000โ€“$5,000): Zero peer-reviewed evidence of health benefits. Not a filtration device. FL tap water already has high pH due to limestone.
